write blog

I recently wrote about the reasons why your business website should include a blog. So were you convinced? 🙂 You may still be resisting because the most spoken objection to creating a blog is always, “How do I get started? I’m not a writer!”

But here’s the thing. Do you talk? Do you have conversations with your clients and customers? I’m thinking you said yes. If so, then you can write for your website blog.

Here are my top tips for getting started.

Decide who your target client is and begin a conversation.

Talk to them. Yes really have a face to face or online conversation. What do they need? What do they ask? Where are their pain points? Now begin to decide how you can solve their problem or lead them in the right direction. Explain and show them how you can help. Then help! Yes, tell them what you know — for free! You have something to give. You can help.

Use your blog to teach, not to sell.

This is a mistake many business owners make. They feel like their blog has to be a sales channel. But the truth is that no one wants to be sold to. Your clients want to know you and like you and trust that you know what you are talking about before they buy from you. Spend time building trust before you sell. Give three times before you ask for anything. A good place to start… what questions do your clients typically ask you? How can you help them?

Finally, you just have to start.

I suggest you map out a content calendar with types of content and lists of topics included. Decide how often you feel like you can consistently post. Is it once a week? Or once a month? The key is consistency. You need to pay attention to what your audience needs and wants. You don’t want to overwhelm your readers, but you also do not want them wondering if you are still active and open for business.

So the best advice I know to tell you and share what you know that helps your followers! Don’t be afraid of telling too many of your secrets. Remember you are simply building your credibility.
